Tullus Hostilius and the Indo-European topic of the three sins of the warrior Among the kings of Rome of the pre-Etruscan period, Tullus Hostilius, as shown by G. Dumézil, appears as a warrior-kind, representative of the Indo-European second function. Therefore, Dumézil had tried to recognize in the tradition about Tullus an occurrence of the widespread « three sins of the warrior » theme. But his comparison with the Indian mythology of the warrior god Indra in the "Markandeyapurana" is not entirely satisfactory. Here is examined the hypothesis that the legend of Tullus Hostilius could be based on another sequence of three sins, those of Horatius, guilty of his sisters murder, Mettius Fufetius, treacherous ally of Rome, and the Albans, who have neglected their ancestral cults.

Dans la série des rois pré-étrusques de Rome, les analyses de G. Dumézil ont amené à reconnaître en Tullus Hostilius la figure d'un roi guerrier comme le fait attendre la tripartition fonctionnelle indoeuropéenne. A partir de cette constatation, G. Dumézil avait essayé de retrouver dans la geste de ce roi l'application d'un modèle légendaire courant, celui des trois péchés du guerrier. Mais la comparaison avec la mythologie du dieu indien Indra telle qu'elle apparaît dans le "Markandeyapurana" qu'il avait proposée n'est pas entièrement satisfaisante. On propose de rendre compte de la geste de Tullus par une autre structure fondée sur une série de trois péchés, ceux d'Horace tuant sa sœur, Mettius Fufetius trahissant Rome et les Albains abandonnant leurs cultes ancestraux.
