La céramique carolingienne du Xe siècle- de Saint-Omer

Jean-Claude Routier, Xth Century Carlovingian Pottery in Saint-Omer. Three sites excavated in Saint-Omer (Quai des Salines, former Albret barracks and Foch barracks) enabled us to gather a trove of potteries whose dating, thanks to dendrochronology, stretches from the second half of the Xth century onward. The study of the pastes allows to identify three productions : a first set in grey and black turned paste, a second in light paste with patterns painted from bright red to brownish marroon, a third in thick moulded paste with a shell-based scour. It is a home production, for culinary use (cooking pots, cauldrons, boiling pots), for storing too (globular pots called « oules »), less often for table use (tumblers, jugs). The quality of the painted pottery makes it akin to the Pingsdorf production, and doesn't preclude imitation. There must be noted too the presence of some painted containers, accidentally of the stoneware type. The post- Carlovingian pottery of Saint-Omer is contemporary of the Brouckerque pottery set whose datation, thanks to a I4C analysis of the hearth, goes back to the last quarter of the Xth century.

Trois sites fouillés à Saint-Omer (quai des Salines, ex-caserne d'Albret et caserne Foch) ont permis de recueillir un ensemble de céramiques datées par dendrochronologie à partir de la seconde moitié du Xe siècle. L'examen des pâtes permet d'identifier trois productions : un premier ensemble en pâte grise et noire tournée, un second en pâtes claires avec décors peints du rouge vif au brun marron, un troisième ensemble en pâte épaisse modelée à dégraissant coquillier. Il s'agit d'une production domestique, à usage culinaire d'abord (pots à cuire, chaudron, marmite), de stockage ensuite (pots globulaires appelés « ouïes »), plus rarement une vaisselle de table (gobelets, cruches). La qualité de la poterie peinte l'apparente à la production de Pingsdorf, sans exclure des imitations de celle-ci. Signalons quelques récipients peints, accidentellement grésés. La poterie post-carolingienne de Saint-Omer est contemporaine de l'ensemble céramique de Brouckerque daté par analyse de foyer au 14C du dernier quart du Xe siècle.

Een keramiekverzameling afkomstig van drie verschil- lende opgravingen te Saint-Omer (Salines kaai, de oude Albert kazerne en de Foch kazerne) werd, dankzij een den- drologische analyse, gedateerd vanaf de tweede helft van de Xe eeuw. Drie soorten produkties werden geïdentificieerd : een grijze tot zwarte gedraaide waar, een heldere waar voor- zien van een geverfde helderrode tot donker bruine versie- ring en een handgemaakte dikke waar verschraald met schelpen. Het betreft vooral een huishoudelijkeproduktie waar de kookpotten een eerste roi spelen, gevolgd door ops- lagmateriaal (bolvormige potten bekend onder de term « ouïes ») en in mindere mate het tafelservies (bekers, kan- nen). De kwaliteit van de geverfde waar lijkt op de Pingsdorfproduktie, maar kan er ook een imitatie van zijn. Enkele van deze beschilderde potten blijken toevallig gebakken als « steengoed ». Het post-karolingisch mate- riaal van Saint-Omer is gelijktijdig met de pottenverzame- ling van Brouckerque gedateerd uit laatste kwart van de xe eeuw dankzij een C14 datering van de haard.
