Pierre Leman, Perforated Bricks in Bavay, Tokens of a Forgotten XVIIth Century Brewery. One found in Bavay, in the 1960s, both fragments of tiles punched with cone-shaped holes and fragments of earthenware displaying evenly spaced cells. The ill-defined circumstances of these findings, confused and ill-assured interpretations made that these artefacts remained mysterious. Were we just dealing with Gallic or Gallo-Roman coin moulds ? A thorough bibliographical research, with some field work, finally shed a partial light on this issue. The perforated elements are the remains of the tiling of the drying yard of a malt-house. In Bavay, this latter belonged to the brewery of the Oratorian college erected in the XVIIth century on what had been the north-east corner of the Roman basilica.

On a découvert à Bavay, dans les années soixante, à la fois des fragments de carreaux percés de trous coniques et des fragments de terre cuite portant des alvéoles régulièrement espacées. Les circonstances mal définies de ces découvertes, des interprétations confuses et peu assurées ont fait que ce matériel restait mystérieux. Avait-on affaire uniquement à des moules à flans monétaires gaulois ou gallo-romains ? Une recherche bibliographique poussée, avec une enquête sur le terrain, a permis d'éclaircir partiellement cette question. Les éléments perforés sont les vestiges de carreaux d'aire de séchage d'une malterie. A Bavay, celle-ci appartenait à la brasserie du collège des Oratoriens édifié au XVII s., à l'emplacement de l'angle nord-est de la basilique romaine.

Pierre Léman, Doorboorde bakstenen in Bavay, overblijfselen van een vergeten brouwerij uit de 17de eeuw. In de jaren '60 ontdekte men in Bavay fragmenten van doorboorde tegels en stukken aardewerk met uithollingen in een regelmatig raster. Wegens de slecht beschreven omstandigheden van de vondst en aarzelende interpretaties, bleven deze stukken mysterieus. Ging het alleen om gallische of galloromeinse malien voor munten ? Via een bibliografisch onderzoek en een contrôle ter plaatse kon men nieuw licht op deze zaak werpen en vaststellen dat de doorboorde stukken fragmenten waren van tegels van een droogruimte in een mouterij. Die maakte deel uit van het Oratorianencollege dat in de 17de eeuw gebouwd werd op de plaats van de noordoostelijke hoek van de romeinse basiliek.
