Résumé En Fr

Regarding the treatment of involuntary memory before Proust and after Rousseau, Sainte-Beuve's Volupté proposes a very original solution because it figures this memory as a privileged weapon of Sin and Grace struggling in the narrator's soul. This spiritualist approach, which combines with some « martinisme », breaks away from the Ideologue 's sensualism, and paves the way for the main romantic approaches of reminiscence. Lastly, the circular structure of this novel anticipates the cyclic temporality of Chateaubriand's Mémoires d'Outre-Tombe and, later, Proust's works.
