Our study is about the woman's role in Maupassant's narration. The woman is often in the background of the narration, although she represents one of the main topics of the work. She almost expresses herself by means of mediations. Therefore, she is significant however discreet in the narrative. We have focused on these numerous mediations to woman's expression. All these barriers which prevent from a direct access to her expression could be used to hide a « shameful secret » that Maupassant would have unconsciously chosen to overshadow...

L'étude porte sur le rôle de la femme dans la narration maupassantienne. La femme n'apparaît souvent qu'au second plan de la narration, bien qu'elle constitue l'un des sujets essentiels de l'œuvre. Elle ne s'exprime quasiment que par le truchement d'instances intermédiaires. Toutefois, la discrétion de sa parole n'en exclut pas l'importance dans l'économie du récit. Nous avons prêté une attention particulière à ces nombreuses médiations à la parole féminine. Toutes ces barrières érigées en écran à cette parole pourraient être destinées à dissimuler un « secret honteux » que Maupassant aurait inconsciemment choisi d'occulter...
