Les États-Unis jouent à l'évidence un rôle majeur en matière de production alimentaire, notamment dans le domaine céréalier et certains craignent même qu 'une position de monopole s 'installe. Le complexe agroalimentaire américain ne laisse aux exploitants agricoles qu 'une place réduite (3 % de la population active) par rapport aux industries transformatrices, aux » chargeurs », aux fournisseurs de pesticides, d'engrais ou de machines. Mais les agriculteurs restent néanmoins la préoccupation centrale de la Politique Agricole Américaine (PAA) élaborée progressivement de 1933 à nos jours. Son objectif principal a été et demeure la conquête des marchés internationaux.
