Anne Marcovich: Contagiousness and public health, a representation of social link in XVIIIth century England. Using the works of an XVIIIth century English physician, Lettsom, Anne Marcovich shows how his ideas on hygiene, illness and the society of his time are linked together. In the background of this analysis lie notions that prevailed in England and in Western Europe in the century of the Enlightenment, where main is conceived as a living and reactive matter, and his immediate surroundings as a microcosm where specific processes take place, where exchanges occur, where policies are drawn up.
