The artistic relationships between Italy and France (1680-1750) : the contradictions of discourse and practice. This essay examines the ambiguity of the artistic relations between France and Italy. Tinged with nationalism, the French discourse progressively rejected the previously unchallenged universal nature of Italian art. However, artistic relationships remained important and relatively even ; the symbolic aspect of the young artist's journey to Italy was the main justification for the continuing existence of the French Academy in Rome.
