The dramatic character of Jane Austen’s novels is immediately apparent in the number of conversations and garrulous characters. But this dramatization has more to do with the structure of the novel itself than appears at first sight. The dialogues are there to uncover the truth about the characters, and words can change the course of events. The heroine on the stage, as in the plays of Sheridan, is often a witness, watching the others behave and helping us to form a judgment about them.

Il est difficile de ne pas être immédiatement sensible à la théâtralité des romans de Jane Austen. Les conversations abondent. Le bavardage s’y donne libre cours. Mais cette théâtralité est davantage liée qu’il n’y paraît à la structure même des ouvrages. Les dialogues nous découvrent les caractères. Les paroles influent sur le cours des événements. L’héroïne est sur la scène un témoin, comme dans les pièces de Sheridan, auquel l’auteur confie le rôle d’aider le lecteur à mieux juger les comportements.
