In his pamphlet The Age of Reason (1794-95), the republican deist Thomas Paine launched a merciless assault on the Bible that grew out of a free-thinking tradition that was already well-established on both sides of the Atlantic. His goal, however, was multifaceted. In the wake of the publication of Rights of Man, in which he had challenged the institution of hereditary monarchy and the alliance of Church and State, Paine endeavored to contest the legitimacy of Christian authorities while advocating deism, which he portrayed as the only religion that conveyed a true idea of God. By encouraging his readership to think for themselves and by fostering public debate, Paine sought to contribute to the achievement of the revolution which had begun in 1776 in Britain’s North American colonies.

Dans Le Siècle de la raison (1794-1795), selon une tradition déjà bien installée dans l’espace transatlantique, le libre penseur Thomas Paine se livra à une attaque sans merci du texte biblique. Le propos était multiple : après s’en être pris à la monarchie héréditaire et à l’alliance de l’Église et de l’État dans les Droits de l’homme (1791-92), Paine chercha dans cet écrit déiste à saper la légitimité des autorités chrétiennes. Il argumentait dans le même temps en faveur du déisme, conçu comme étant la seule religion qui proposait une idée juste de Dieu. Paine entendait contribuer au parachèvement de l’entreprise révolutionnaire entamée en 1776 en incitant ses lecteurs à penser par eux-mêmes, mais aussi en encourageant le débat public.
