For Evgenij Baratynskij (1800-1844), a romantic poet of the Golden Age of Russian poetry, as for all Russian aristocrats of the 19th century, it was absolutely natural to write in French. In Paris during the winter of 1843-1844 he translated some of his poems into French on the request of Adolphe de Circourt and his French colleagues, such as Prosper Mérimée. When Baratynskij chose to translate poetry into prose, he not only sacrificed to the tradition of that time, but his choice was probably also motivated by a metapoetic approach. Unlike other textological studies that question the authorship of these translations by attributing them to a collective work, this paper studies the fifteen prose poems of M. Gofman’s 1914 edition by questioning the problems of poetic translation: the choice of translation into prose and a conception of poetry as already being by its very nature a translation and a setting aside. The article favors an approach of translation studies and poetics that does not question the authorship of these translations, but the very phenomenon of poetic bilingualism in the context of the bilingualism of Russian nobility. Leaving aside the question of the attribution of French translations of Baratynskij’s poetry, which has already been addressed by other scholars, the author sets out to show how Baratynskij sought to make his prose poetic.
