Anne Winter, « Changer de place. Occupations, réseaux et carrières des immigrants à Anvers au xviiie siècle », Mélanges de l’École française de Rome - Italie et Méditerranée modernes et contemporaines, ID : 10.4000/mefrim.593
Using a sample of more than 5,500 immigrants enumerated in the census undertaken at Anvers in 1796, this article aims to retrace the modes of recruitment local to this town and to analyse the professional organisation of the immigrants. The intention is to demonstrate that the restrictions on migration in the second half of the 18th century essentially brought about a disadvantageous structure for local opportunity, dominated by textile industries offering poor wages. The characteristics of the professional organisation of the immigrants principally reflects their rural provenance. Nevertheless these structural constraints left enough room for individual or collective action, in which the familial and regional networks helped establish relative advantages in certain jobs with a rural orientation. Thereafter, the majority of long term migrants were considerably better off than their indigenous equivalents, while many of the temporary migrants were in an equally advantageous position due to their economic or training objectives.
