Françoise Launay, « D’Alembert réveillé par l’astronome Lalande », Recherches sur Diderot et sur l’Encyclopédie, ID : 10.4000/rde.5316
A few mainly autograph manuscripts now in the Inguimbertine Library in Carpentras provide new information on D’Alembert gathered by Lalande, who had always been interested in him. These ‘anecdotes’, which the astronomer was fond of, come from colleagues or acquaintances shared by the two men, but also from the eldest daughter of D’Alembert’s wet-nurse, questioned by Lalande in 1784. These documents, whose reliability we have been able to check in part, together with previous research on D’Alembert’s wet-nurse, schoolmaster and identities, throw new light on aspects of his childhood and friendships.
