Le service historique de la Défense est le fruit de la fusion, en 2005, des quatre services historiques des armées (Air, Terre, Marine, Gendarmerie). Ces services qui traitaient essentiellement les archives écrites possédaient également des cellules d’histoire orale créées à l’initiative de la hiérarchie militaire entre 1974 et la seconde moitié des années 1990. L’histoire et les enjeux de ces cellules d’histoire orale des services historiques des différentes armées ont fait l’objet de différentes études universitaires, notamment sous la direction de Florence Descamps. La cellule d’histoire orale du Service historique de l’armée de l’Air était la plus ancienne, la collecte de témoignages oraux ayant commencé dès 1974. L’ancienneté de cette pratique fait du ministère de la Défense un des plus gros producteurs et conservateurs de corpus oraux à caractère historique.

The Service historique de la Défense is the result of the reunion, in 2005, of the four historical departments of the French armies (Air Force, Land army, Navy, Gendarmerie). These departments, which treated essentially the written archives, also possessed units of oral history created on the initiative of the military hierarchy between 1974 and second half of the 1990s. The history and the stakes of the units of oral history of these historical departments made the object of various university studies, in particular supervised by Florence Descamps. The unit of oral history of the Air Force historical Department was the oldest, the collection of oral testimonies having begun from 1974. The age of this practice makes of the French ministère de la Défense one of the biggest producers and curators of historical oral archives collections. In 2005, the merger of oral history units gives birth to the division of the oral testimonies (DTO). In 2016, the DTO holds more than 2400 testimonies, inventoried, and the finding aid is being prepared. Several oral archives collections deal with the Algerian war (1954-1962), with approximately 1 100 testimonies. The accumulation of these collections of oral archives with that of the written archives (approximately 2000 boxes, in particular in the series GR 1 H), as well as with that of the picture library (approximately 30 boxes of photos) makes of the SHD the biggest French center of resources on the Algerian war.
