During the early modern period, in the Alsace and Lorraine region, many witch trials took place within a very complicated jurisdictional network. The boundaries of witchcraft were often blurred and, if some of the accused individuals tried to escape from the judicial system, it was hard to convict in certain cases where the difference between orthodox believes and deviancy was ambiguous.
