Les magistrats du Conseil souverain d’Alsace ont marqué leur appartenance à l’élite parlementaire française en se constituant de grandes bibliothèques privées. Oscillant entre une bibliothèque professionnelle et de loisirs, ces collections attestent de la forte imprégnation du français et affichent une évolution dans le choix des thématiques. Au cours du XVIIIe siècle, s’amorce un changement dans les pratiques de lecture. L’émergence de sociétés de lecture à Colmar dénote les besoins d’échanges culturels de ces élites.

The magistrates of the Conseil Souverain d’Alsace belong to the judicial elite of France: like that elite, they have also built up big private libraries. The libraries reflect the professionnal and leisure interests of the magistrates. They also do reflect the progress of the french language and the change in the subjects of the books collected. At the end of the XVIIIth century, a new form of library appears: the society library. The Revolution will create public libraries.

Die Richter des elsässischen Conseil Souverain haben große private Bibliotheken im Achtzehn Jahrhundert aufgestellt. Zwischen einer beruflichen und kulturellen Bibliothek, fassen diese Sammlungen viele Bucher auf Französisch und zeigen eine Entwickelung in der Themaswahl. Im Laufe des Achtzehn Jahrhunderts, verändert sich die Praxis des Lesens und einige Lesungsgesellschaft erscheinen im Colmar. Das Bedürfnis des kulturellen Austauschs dieser Elite hat den Aufschwung dieser Gesellschaften beigetragt.
