Le secrétaire municipal strasbourgeois Sébastien Brant, qui a mis en scène, à Strasbourg, l’été 1512 une pièce de sa création « Tugent Spyl » (le jeu de la vertu), a aussi apporté sa contribution aux Jeux de la Passion qui ont été présentés pour Pâques 1512 au Marché aux Chevaux (actuelle Place Broglie). Sans doute avait-il retravaillé une pièce qui avait déjà été jouée en 1488. Il n’est pas possible d’affirmer que Brant ait été en charge de la mise en scène, les ordonnances et chroniques ne le relatent pas. Ce qui est clairement documenté pour les années 1512-1518, c’est que Brant, de par son influente fonction de secrétaire de la ville, n’a pas seulement suivi ces représentations avec une bienveillante attention, mais qu’il a fait en sorte que la ville mette à disposition les moyens financiers et matériels (échafaudages, local pour les costumes et accessoires, etc.) nécessaires. De plus, il a établi un règlement afin de prévenir les troubles, vociférations, comportements indécents, obstructions visuelles, etc. de façon à ce que ces représentations, qui duraient plusieurs jours, puissent se dérouler sans perturbations. Ces prescriptions, que Brant a conçues au nom de la ville, sont ici éditées pour la première fois.

The city of Strasbourg secretary Sebastian Brant who had devised and staged a play called ‘Tugend Spyl” (the play of virtue) in Summer 1512 also contributed to the Passion Plays performed at Easter 1512 in the Horse Market (now Place Broglie). He had probably rearranged a play that had already been performed in 1488. It is impossible to guarantee that Brant had been responsible for the staging of the play, as nothing is mentioned in ordinances or chronicles. What is undisputable is that, as a city secretary he was influential enough, not only to supervise these performances with a kindly attention but to ensure that the town was providing enough financial and material support (scaffolding, a room to house costumes and equipment etc). Moreover, he set up rules so as to prevent trouble, shouting, indecent behaviour, or obstruction etc and thus give these performances that would last several days a chance to go undisturbed. It was the first time that such prescriptions, formulated by Brant on behalf of the city, had been published.

Der Straßburger Stadtschreiber Sebastian Brant (1457-1521), der im Sommer 1512 das von ihm verfasste „Tugent Spyl“ in Straßburg zur Aufführung brachte, war auch am Passionsspiel beteiligt, das an Ostern 1512 auf dem Rossmarkt (heute: Place Broglie) aufgeführt wurde. Ein bereits vorhandenes Spiel wurde von Brant bearbeitet (sehr wahrscheinlich war es das Spiel, das 1488 aufgeführt worden war). Ob Brant an den Aufführungen als Spielleiter beteiligt war, lässt sich anhand dieser Mandate und auch der Angaben in den Chroniken nicht feststellen. Klar belegt ist hingegen, dass Brant in seiner Funktion als einflussreicher Stadtschreiber die Aufführungen in den Jahren 1512 bis 1518 nicht nur aufmerksam und wohlwollend mitverfolgt hat, sondern auch dafür gesorgt hat, dass sie seitens der Stadt nach Kräften sowohl finanziell als auch durch Verfügungstellung der Infrastruktur (Gerüste, Raum für Requisiten und Kostüme etc.) unterstützt wurden. Zudem sorgte er mit sehr genauen Bestimmungen dafür, dass Unruhe, Geschrei, unzüchtigem Verhalten, Sichtbehinderungen etc. vorgebeugt wurde und die mehrtägigen Spiele somit ohne Störungen und Beeinträchtigungen stattfinden konnten. Die Mandate, die Brant im Auftrag des Rates verfasst hat, werden hier zum erstenmal ediert.
