Has the Kochersberg really been the historic “corn loft” of Alsace? What about the successive presence of the Roman occupation and the Merovingians in this definitely strategic spot between the Rhine and the Vosges? The names of villages, uninterruptedly transmitted from the 8th century to our days, are a both precious and reliable indication. As a matter of fact, these names have rarely been studied, neither have the numerous smaller localities of the 12th and 13th centuries, although the latter have been listed systematically in our archives by respectable specialists. They essentially refer to military appellations for places where battle horse units –whose names where often related to Arbogast- have settled on land that was available. This study intends to highlight a series of problems arising in this context, for the benefit of both law and institutions historians and linguists whose contribution is to be taken seriously. It may also offer occasional solutions, however modest.
