Between 1928 and 1932, Montherlant visited several times the Roman ruins of Cherchel in Algeria. He took notes on the spot, then out of them he drew a sketch of an essay he never completed. Reading through these unpublished documents, we can see the writer at work. This file gives us informations on Montherlant, the man and the tourist he was, his relation to the outside world and culture (Roman antiquity and Greco-Roman sculpture). Among other things, it leads us to imagine why the writer didn’t give to these pages a definitive form.
