Mona Lohanda (1947-2021), whom I always knew as ‘Nona Mona,’ was that truly rare phenomenon in the world of Indonesian archivists and historians, a person of integrity. Throughout her forty-year career as an archivist at the Indonesian National Archives (ANRI), she became the gatekeeper to the VOC (Dutch East India Company) records held in Jakarta (pre-1942, Batavia).
