Whereas France undertake to develop a real radio network in her sub-Saharan African colonies during the fifties with the Societé de Radiodiffusion de la France d’Outre-Mer, the question of the equipment (transmitters, tape recorders, mixing desks…) in that very specific context arise. This article argues that Pierre Schaeffer and the other founders of the SORAFOM deliberately got around with the norms established by the Radio Télévision Française, which normally imposed her standards on all French territories within the context of monopoly, and contributed thus to create a specific equipment and a different acoustic for radios in French sub-Saharan Africa. In doing so, the essay synthesizes three bodies of literatures: technical history and especially the building of norms, Sound Studies and finally the history of media in Africa. The article reveals the reasons which drove the engineers of the SORAFOM to design a specific material, it proposes to enlighten the process of elaboration of new norms and specific devices. It also presents the results of this effort which were also criticised by those who used it. This essay is based on the exploitation of original archives of French ministère de la Cooperation and rare testimonials of formers engineers of the SORAFOM.
