In 1988, the underwater excavation of the port of Thasos allowed the recovery of an imposing marble slab, at the same time that other blocks were found piled in front of the ancient pier. In 2017, a new examination of the stone, which originally belonged to the face of a building in the nearby agora, revealed an inscription rendered nearly illegible by its prolonged exposure to saltwater. The Deme of the Thasians honored their patron, Caius Octavius, proconsul of Macedonia in 60‑59 BC.
