The article examines the coat of arms located on the edge of a well in the medieval fortress of Arta. A. Orlandos published the coat of arms in 1936 and attributed it to the Italian family of the so called Orsinis, which ruled in Arta during the 14th c. The article proves per contra that it should be attributed to another Italian family, the Toccos, who ruled in Arta from 1416 to 1449. It describes their composition associating the proper arms of the Tocco family with the arms of the princes of Taranto, titular emperors of Constantinople, and with the famous Byzantine double-headed eagle. It studies the signification of the arms and replaces them in the context of the heraldry of the Tocco family, of the Western heraldry connected to Byzantium and of the Byzantine heraldry. Finally, it studies their posterity in the later arms of the descendants of the family.
