The archaeological site of Khirbat al‑Dūsaq is located in Southern Jordan near Shawbak Castle and it can be dated to the Ayyubid period (13th century AD). It consists of three buildings, including a hammam and a reception hall (īwān). Since 2015, the complex has been excavated by a team from the French Institute of the Near East (Ifpo). During the fieldwork in 2016 and 2018, several inscribed stone fragments were found. Among these pieces, two were parts of the same inscription mentioning the construction of the hammam in 620/1223. This building had been patronized by the Ayyubid Sultan al‑Malik al‑Muʿaẓẓam ʿĪsā, son of Saladin’s brother, al‑ʿĀdil. Two other stone fragments were then discovered: one bearing a date and the other showing an inscription in relief. These findings mean that the buildings were adorned with, at least, three inscriptions which is quite rare for such a small‑scaled site. The confrontation of the remains and inscriptions with paleographic and onomastic data from the historical sources led us to replace the site in the broader context of the economic and political impulse initiated by the sultan al‑Muʿaẓẓam ʿĪsā in the region.
