Preventive archaeology in Reims over the last 30 years has produced a considerable amount of data about the capital of the Gallia Belgica province, offering a new vision of the urban outline. The main changes to the urban structure can be seen through successive enclosures, street networks, housing and monumental buildings. A pattern of urbanization and development of the outer districts and the ancient city centre can be seen in the way the urban space was divided up and modified. The insulae in Reims were among the largest in the Roman Empire. Analysis of their spatial organization, the way they were divided up, and the outline of the buildings all suggest the existence of housing estates and town planning regulations.
