À propos des « avant-ports » de Narbonne

La ville antique de Narbonne était reliée à une vaste lagune par le cours de l’Aude, nécessitant pour le commerce une navigation fluvio-lagunaire et des opérations de transferts de marchandises des bateaux de haute mer vers des embarcations fluviales. Autour des étangs, plusieurs sites sont considérés par l’historiographie comme des « avant-ports ». Or, excepté le site de Mandirac identifié comme l’embouchure du fleuve, il s’agit d’établissements littoraux dont le rôle dans le système portuaire restait à préciser. Deux sites ont fait l’objet de recherches récentes dans cet objectif : Saint-Martin à Gruissan et Port-la-Nautique à Narbonne. Le premier est situé à l’entrée de la lagune narbonnaise, le second en fond d’étang et proche de l’ancienne embouchure de l’Aude. Une approche interdisciplinaire a permis de renouveler la documentation nécessaire pour préciser leurs fonctions.

The ancient town of Narbonne was connected to a vast lagoon by the River Aude, and therefore trade required shipping adapted to rivers and lagoons, as well as transhipment operations from seagoing vessels onto river craft. Several sites around the basins and inlets are considered within historiography as “outports”, however, except for the site of Mandirac, identified as the river mouth, these are coastal installations whose role within the port system is still to be established. Two sites have recently been investigated with this in view: Saint-Martin at Gruissan and Port-la-Nautique at Narbonne. The first is located at the entrance to Narbonne lagoon; the second is at the head of an inlet and close to the ancient mouth of the Aude. A multidisciplinary approach has been applied in order to update the required documentation for a precise understanding of their functions.
