Entangled fields. Sources and hypotheses for the history of Afro-Brazilian, African-American and african studies in Brazil and the United States

This exploratory article results from research still in progress in a set of archives in the US and deals with the thematic and biographic entangled history of African-American, Afro-Brazilian and African studies carried out in the US and Brazil in the period roughly corresponding to three decades, 1940-1970. It focuses on two important and original characters, Melville J. Herskovits and Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane, and argues that a perspective emphasizing both the history of institutions and individual trajectories or biographies might elicit interesting new details that might otherwise remain underlit.

Cet article exploratoire est le résultat d’une recherche en cours dans une collection d’archives aux États-Unis et prend pour objet l’histoire thématique et biographique entrelacée des études afro-américaines, afro-brésiliennes et africaines menées aux États-Unis et au Brésil sur une période d’environ trois décennies, de 1940 à 1970. Il se concentre sur deux figures emblématiques, Melville J. Herskovits et Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane, et soutient qu’une perspective qui met l’accent à la fois sur l’histoire des institutions et sur les trajectoires ou biographies individuelles peut apporter de nouveaux détails intéressants qui, autrement, resteraient ignorés.

Este artigo exploratório é resultado de uma pesquisa em andamento em uma coleção de arquivos nos Estados Unidos e tem como objeto a história temática e biográfica entrelaçada dos estudos afro-americanos, afro-brasileiros e africanos realizados nos Estados Unidos e no Brasil, no período de aproximadamente três décadas, de 1940-1970. Ele se concentra em dois personagens emblemáticos, Melville J. Herskovits e Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane, e defende que uma perspectiva que enfatize tanto a história das instituições quanto as trajetórias ou as biografias individuais pode produzir novos detalhes interessantes que, de outra forma, permaneceriam ignorados.
