Our contribution attempts to demonstrate how phantasmagoria, an optical device that projects a medley of animated image, strongly influencing the nature of vision and perception in the 19th century, manages to transgress the border between the real and the unreal. The apparatus itself is highly indebted to science and optical research. Despite this scientific background, phantasmagoria does not lead to a more rational or critical attitude towards the projected images of ghosts, demons or other supernatural visions. Paradoxically, the visual force of its images – thanks to the use of new technology – is so strong that it tends to lend an even greater persuasiveness to the ghostly visions it produces. Oscillating between reality and imagination, phantasmagoria becomes an example for the psyche, influencing the mental functioning, through possibly disturbing phantasmical apparitions. (haunted by possible master trope of the human spirit and its illusionary functioning, contaminating it with its uncanny aura.)
