Mathilde Rogez, « “I am making a start; or, if not that, making a gesture”: J. M. Coetzee’s Aesthetics of Tentativeness », Commonwealth Essays and Studies, ID : 10.4000/ces.8437
Scholars have often criticized Coetzee for the indecision of his characters, but also for the political and stylistic vacillation they see in his writing. A closer examination of the stylistic devices used by Coetzee, in particular his use of italics, of repetitions and linguistic variations, as well as of implicit translation, on the contrary reveals that tentativeness can become a powerful verbal gesture.
