En este trabajo analizo las influencias antropológicas, teológicas y religiosas que configuran las experiencias, el pensamiento y las reflexiones de Sara Josefina Newbery Hueyo durante su trabajo como agente del primer Censo Indígena Nacional llevado a cabo, al menos de manera formal, entre 1965 y 1968. Este análisis es realizado a partir de un corpus conformado por las cartas que Sara redactó a Victorina María Lacaze, religiosa de la Compañía del Divino Maestro (CDM), durante sus viajes a distintas comunidades indígenas de Argentina. El objetivo es reconstruir los respectivos contextos dentro de los cuales realizó su labor como censista y, a la vez, describir su particular modo de transitarlos. En este sentido, es posible observar que su labor como censista se encuentra tensionada por las relaciones que mantiene con, por un lado, aquel que ha sido su ámbito de formación como religiosa y en el que aún insiste en fundar su “casa”, en dónde encuentra el afecto que necesita para realizar sus trabajos; y, por el otro, el ámbito secular de la antropología que la ha constituido en una profesional, y respecto del cual subraya aspectos que la empoderan a la hora de tomar decisiones o emitir reflexiones autorizadas sobre los indígenas.

In this paper I analyze the anthropological, theological and religious influences that shape the experiences, thought and reflections of Sara Josefina Newbery Hueyo during her work as agent of the first National Indigenous Census carried out, at least formally, between 1965 and 1968. This analysis is based on a corpus of letters that Sara wrote to Victorina María Lacaze, a sister of the Compañía del Divino Maestro (CDM), during her trips to different indigenous communities in Argentina. The aim is to reconstruct the respective contexts within which she carried out her work as a census agent and, at the same time, describe her personal way of dealing with each. In this sense, we note that her work as a census agent is put in tension by the relationships she maintains with, on the one hand, those from her field of instruction as a religious woman and on which she still insists on founding her "home", and from where she draws the affection needed to do her job; and, on the other hand, the secular field of anthropology where she trained professionally, and which underlie the views that empower her making decisions or issuing authorized reflections on indigenous people.
