Due to rebellious vandalism and decades of lack of maintenance, many religious buildings are threatened by ruin, primarily Gothic in style. Echoing the work of Viollet-le-Duc in Paris, Metz’s cathedral experienced an extensive restauration campaign in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, under the direction of German architect Paul Tornow. With a new roof, a new portal and a new spire, the cathedral underwent much work that aimed to "re-Gothify" something that was already Gothic, in a city recently conquered by the new reich. In order to judge the effects that his work would have on the building as well as on the skyline of the city, the architect used numerous “photomontages”, adding a spire here, modifying the roofing there. He also compared the construction site in Metz to the examples of the cathedrals in Paris and Amiens in order to "choose" the best options for his work. These preserved archives represent a unique and singular testimony to the work of the architect, which associates project and photography.
