Résumé
This investigation of Shanghai’s contemporary art scene in 2020 is a commendable output from Afterall’s Exhibition Histories series. Three exhibitions are examined: the 2000 Shanghai Biennale, Fuck Off, and Useful Life. The unusual juxtaposition of exhibitions (state-sponsored or semi-censored) with regard to Shanghai’s re-established cultural and financial powerhouse position at the turn of the century is analysed in depth in Jane DeBevoise’s essay.
