En étudiant depuis une perspective contemporaine les témoignages des lecteurs du xviiie siècle sur des textes médiévaux, l’article montre l’opposition de deux régimes de lecture. Le premier conçoit le texte comme une rhétorique linéaire. Le second reconstruit une tectonique textuelle pour faire émerger de ses failles un sens caché. Ces deux régimes de lecture sont préparés par le texte, qui ordonne sa forme en fonction d’une visée à la fois typologique (ou syntagmatique) et herméneutique (ou tabulaire).

By bringing a contemporary reading to the testimonies of eighteenth century readers of medieval texts, the article demonstrates a contrast between two modes of reading. The first reading understands the text as a linear rhetoric. The second reconstructs a form of textual tectonics in order to discern the hidden meaning that lies below its surface. These two modes of reading are invited by the text, whose form is shaped by a perspective that is both typological (or syntagmatic) and hermeneutic (or tabular).
