Hassan El Geretly founded in 1987 the first independent theatre company in Egypt under the name of El-Warsha as a reaction against the existing theatrical institutions in the country. He willingly compares himself to the Wolf of Jean de La Fontaine’ fable “The Wolf and the Dog”: in the beginning of the 1990s, he adds this text to the repertoire of the company and it becomes a sort of manifesto which testifies of Hassan El Geretly’s position at the margins of the institution. This article is a portrait of the artist, based on interviews, formal and informal discussions. It also permits, through this individual case, to replace this subjective narrative in the context of the emergence of an independent theatrical stage in Egypt as an important artistic and political movement that grows at the beginning of the 1990s.
