The Afterlives of Cairenes: the Making of New Social Geographies from Elsewhere than Bulaq Abule’lla

Some major events change people’s lives, while everyday events constitute their living times. In this paper, I look at the afterlives of Maspero Triangle and Ramlet Bulaq where the residents were dispossessed through forced and negotiated evictions (Khalil 2019, 102), unfulfilled promises, and discursive violence. I argue how varied forms of violence, along with the conflicts around real estate, created a status of being as afterlives for the people’s everyday details in the aftermath of leaving Bulaq Abule’lla. The paper looks at residents’ memories and their afterlives at the new neighborhoods, additionally to their new geographies’ understanding. The paper is based on a multi-sited ethnography in four neighborhoods. I explain my argument through four walks starting from Bulaq Abule’lla to other geographies in Cairo and Giza. The four walks alongside four different persons: two collaborators from Maspero Triangle, and two from Ramlet Bulaq. The main actors in this paper are the residents of Bulaq Abule’lla who were relocated from their homes and reside in new neighborhoods.

Certains évènements changent la vie des gens, tandis que d’autres, quotidiens, en constituent la vie même. Dans cet article, j’examine « la vie d’après » des habitants du triangle de Maspero et de Ramlet Bulaq, où la population a été dépossédée et expulsée de force, par la négociation (Khalil 2019, 102), par des promesses non-tenues et de la violence discursive. Je montre comment les différentes formes de violence ainsi que les conflits immobiliers ont façonné l’état d’esprit de « la vie d’après », dans chaque détail du quotidien des habitants évincés de Bulaq Abule’lla. Cet article examine les mémoires qu’ont les habitants de leur ancien quartier, ainsi que leurs vies récentes dans les nouveaux quartiers et géographies. Pour cela, je propose quatre marches depuis Bulaq Abule’lla vers d’autres quartiers du Caire et de Giza, quatre excursions en compagnie de personnes différentes : deux collaborateurs du triangle de Maspero, et deux de Ramlet Bulaq. Les personnages principaux de cet article sont les habitants de Bulaq Abulle’lla qui ont été relogés dans de nouveaux quartiers.

ترسخ الاحداث المؤثرة تغيرات عدة في حياة المجتمعات، بينما ترسخ الممارسات اليومية بأحداثها إيقاع الحياة. في هذه الورقة، اعرض تحليلا لحياة سكان مثلث ماسبيرو ورملة بولاق بعد تهجيرهم من بولاق أبو العلا الي مناطق اخري. اعرض حياتهم في المناطق الجغرافية الأخرى، المتمثلة في حيواتهم المستقبلية حول بولاق العلا، وبعد التعرض للتهجير التفاوضي (خليل ٢٠١٩، ١٢)، ما صاحبه وعود غير منفذة من قبل الحكومة، واشكال مختلفة من العنف في حياتهم. افترض في اطروحتي ان السكان تعرضوا لتقاطعات مختلفة من الممارسات العنيفة يتضمنها الطرد، بعد مشاحنات مع عدد من المطورين العقاريين في بولاق أبو العلا، ما يضع حياتهم الحالية ضمن تحليل الحيوات المستقبلية والاوقات الكارثية والتي تعرضوا فيها للعنف. تتناول هذه الورقة ذكريات السكان السابقين لبولاق أبو العلا والحيوات المستقبلية لممارستهم الجديدة في المناطق الجغرافية الجديدة والتي يقطنوها حاليا. هذه الورقة مبنية على البحث الميداني في أربع مناطق جغرافية بالقاهرة والجيزة، وفيها اتناول اطروحتي عن مفهوم الحيوات المستقبلية لسكان قاهريين خصوصا من بولاق أبو العلا. تناولي يأتي من خلال أربع جولات يبدأوا من بولاق الي العلا لمناطق جغرافية أخري. الأشخاص المتعاونين معي في هذا البحث هم من سكان بولاق العلا سابقا وتم نقلهم الي مناطق جديدة كما اتعرض لها في هذه الورقة.
