À partir de l’analyse du récit Geschichte vom alten Kind (1999) de Jenny Erpenbeck, il s’agira de montrer dans quelle mesure le thème de la métamorphose est un dispositif littéraire susceptible de saisir la relation entre expérience historique et perception individuelle du temps : comment la transformation physique d’une jeune femme en enfant peut être lue comme une parabole des bouleversements de 1989 et interroger le conflit entre temps individuel et temps historique. Nous examinerons la transformation de la protagoniste, sa conception d’un temps à soi finalement vouée à l’échec, la mise en œuvre narrative de cette tension temporelle ainsi que la signification de l’abject associé à la fillette.

Anhand der Analyse von Jenny Erpenbecks Erzählung Geschichte vom alten Kind (1999) soll gezeigt werden, inwiefern das Thema der Metamorphose ein literarisches Mittel ist, um das Verhältnis von historischer Erfahrung und individueller Zeitwahrnehmung zu erfassen. Die körperliche Verwandlung einer jungen Frau in ein Kind wird als Gleichnis für den Umbruch des Jahres 1989 gelesen, das für den Konflikt zwischen individueller und historischer Zeit steht. Untersucht werden die Verwandlung der Protagonistin, ihre letztlich zum Scheitern verurteilte Konzeption einer eigenen Zeit, die erzählerische Umsetzung dieser zeitlichen Spannung sowie die Bedeutung des mit dem Mädchen verbundenen Abjekten.

The analysis of Jenny Erpenbeck’s Geschichte vom alten Kind (1999) will be used to show the extent to which the theme of metamorphosis is a literary device to capture the relationship between historical experience and individual perception of time. The physical transformation of a young woman into a child is read as a parable for the upheaval of 1989, representing the conflict between individual and historical time. We will examine the transformation of the protagonist, her conception of a time of her own that is ultimately doomed to failure, the narrative realization of this temporal tension as well as the significance of the abject associated with the girl.
