The early 2000s saw the emergence of an association between artists’ collectives and certain urban projects. At a moment in time that saw the growing importance of consultations with local residents, artists were seen as potential mediators and were invited to reinforce urban policies. This resulted in a certain number of urban renewal projects being given cultural funds used to develop artistic projects. The involvement of artists in urban projects reveals the roles expected of them with regards to educational or political issues. However, the various representations of the artist’s role are sometimes in contradiction. From the point of view of architects, urban planners and developers, expectations focus mainly on a project’s mediation, the social acceptance of the project. But artists might prefer to see themselves a part of the creative process behind an urban project, able to provide a contribution by working alongside other professionals. This article proposes to throw some light on this type of collaboration through the example of the installation of artists’ residences in a major urban development project (Grand Projet de Ville – GPV) located in the Duchère district of Lyons (2003-2017), where an ambitious cultural component makes it possible to question the specific modalities of the action of artists’ collectives. Analysis is interested here in the definition of an institutional framework for the contribution to be made by the artists within an urban renewal project and, on the other hand, in the knowledge and know-how expected from the artistic action. We shall examine the problems encountered as well as the changes in representations lying at the heart of the learning process that led to a reconsideration of the role to be played by the artists’ residence.
