Alice Bottarelli, « Jean Villard-Gilles, auteur hors du livre ? », Itinéraires, ID : 10.4000/itineraires.12790
At the intersection of several arts (literature, theatre, music), the art of songs and singing questions the passage from text to performance – but mostly, in the case of Jean Villard-Gilles, the passage from performance (first, whole) to the printed text (where the song appears “naked”, stripped of its melodic attire and its vocal and gestural incarnation). Gilles’ career, which is unique in the history of French and Francophone art song, enables us to examine the interaction/intricacy of literature and its “outside”. His perspectives on his favourite medium as well as on the other forms and genres that surround it (poetry, comedy, song) reveal an ambiguous ethos of author-performer-singer.
