For more than ten years, the department of sociology social anthropology and demography of the Université de Picardie Jules Verne (Amiens, France) has offered courses in visual anthropology. The purpose of this curriculum is twofold. One goal is to introduce students to the history of ethnographic filmmaking. The other is to call attention to issues shared by both filmmakers and ethnographers: from where and at what distance to film and/or make observations of a scene or event, how long to film it, what to display/show and how, with how much detail, and finally how to conceive film editing and/or ethnographic writing. Two fondamental directions characterize this curriculum, one is the reference to the approach of « postazione per la memoria » as taught at Ipotesi cinema, and the other is to haïkus.
