La ville de Dyrrachium se situe sur le littoral oriental de la mer Adriatique. Idéalement située pour accéder aux Balkans depuis l’Italie, elle a bénéficié de relations précoces avec la péninsule. Dès 229 avant J.-C., lorsque les légions interviennent pour la première fois outre Adriatique, la ville devient un élément central des stratégies politiques, militaires et économiques de Rome. La fondation d’une colonie à Dyrrachium ne saurait donc surprendre et le présent article se donne pour objectif de montrer l’impact de la fondation d’une colonie romaine sur les institutions antérieures de la cité de Dyrrachium, sa société et son cadre urbain. L’analyse replace en outre la Colonia Iulia Augusta Dyrrachinorum dans le contexte plus large du territoire de la cité dont elle offre la première étude globale afin de mettre en lumière les conséquences particulières qu’eut le changement de statut juridique. En parallèle aux importants investissements impériaux dans le cadre urbain (amphithéâtre, aqueduc, thermes, bibliothèque), les sources archéologiques et épigraphiques témoignent également de l’augmentation notable du nombre de sites ruraux dans la chôra de Dyrrachium.

The city of Dyrrachium is situated in the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. Its proximity with Italy made possible very early relations between the two cities. Since 229 BC when Rome crossed the Adriatic for the first time, this city became the principal theatre of political, military and economical operations, where even the fate of Rome was played. In this article we try to present the impact that had the installation of the roman colony in the institutions, the society and the urbanization of Dyrrachium. Moreover, we will present a first study of the large territory of this colony. Parallel with the main imperial investments in the urban domain (amphitheatre, aqueduct, baths, library), the archaeological and epigraphic sources show also an important increasing number of rural sites in the territory of Dyrrachium.
