Los Lollii: en torno al origen y al ascenso de una oscura gens

Intento de reconstruir parte de la historia de una gens oscura, de origen incierto, y de su ascenso a los círculos del poder del Estado: desde un negotiator de Delos de mediados del s. II a.C. al cónsul del año 21 a.C., Marcus Lollius, amigo de Augusto, pasando por el tribunus plebis del año 71 a.C. Se aportan tres novedades al «dossier»: la consideración del significado del cognomen Palikanus/Παλλακεῖνος, usado por una rama de la familia, la propuesta de que el adjetivo picens no lleve necesariamente al Piceno y la incorporación de las marcas de M. Lollius Q. f. sobre ánforas Lamb.2 a los testimonios sobre los diversos negocios de la familia.

The Lollii: On the origin and rise of an obscure gens. Trade interests, political power and “family matters”. An attempt to reconstruct part of the history of an obscure gens of uncertain origin and its rise to the inner circles of state power: from a mid-second century BC negotiator based in Delos to the consul of year 21 BC, Marcus Lollius, a friend of Augustus, passing through the tribunus plebis of 71 BC. Three novelties are introduced to the “dossier”: a consideration of the meaning of the cognomen Palikanus / Παλλακεῖνος, used by a branch of the family, the proposal that the adjective picens does not necessarily refer to Picenum and the incorporation of the marks of M. Lollius Q. f. on Lamb.2 amphorae to the evidence for the diverse family businesses.
