Résumé It En

The Jesuits and witches. An absent problem? The contribution retraces the historical problem of the relationship between the Society of Jesus and the persecution of witchcraft from the end of the 16th to the first third of the 17th century. The witch hunt, in fact, is conspicuously absent from studies on the Society in modern times, despite the centrality of some authors of the order, first, in the systematization of a theory of witchcraft, and, then, in the criticism of trials in a second time. From this point of view, the Jesuit production on the subject is uneven, and indeed characterized by a clear reversal of attitude that occurs over the course of a couple of decades; the paper argues that this change has connections with the emergence of moral theology as a discipline in itself, and the consequent attempt to ascribe to confession a monopoly of judgment, in the forum internum, of reliability of the accusations of witchcraft, to the detriment of judicial practice.
