La question des élites rurales du monde musulman ne peut être abordée aisément. L’absence totale d’archives, une civilisation urbano-centrée, un regard presque exclusivement normatif ainsi que les déformations nées des lectures coloniales des sources arabes constituent autant d’obstacles à l’approche de la question de la différenciation sociale dans les campagnes du monde musulman. De ce fait, l’historiographie des campagnes est en complet décalage avec celle de l’Occident. L’analyse économique, cependant, l’exploitation, après le XIIIe siècle, des fragments de sources fiscales à la disposition de la recherche, par exemple en Égypte, permettent de construire des analyses sociales assez fines.

The matter of the rural elites in the muslim area of the mediterranean cannot be easily treated.
