In epoca carolingia la mobilità di quei morti speciali che erano i santi visse profondi ripensamenti. La fruizione della santità e gli spostamenti di reliquie furono sottoposti a un crescente controllo da parte dell’autorità pubblica. Nuovi modi di narrare la mobilità delle reliquie furono elaborati. Molte narrazioni di traslazioni furono tese a dimostrare come esse si fossero svolte nel rispetto delle regole. Altre, i cosiddetti furta sacra, esaltarono al contrario l’iniziativa dei traslatori e il consenso di un altro tipo di autorità, quella di Dio e dei santi stessi. Nella scelta delle modalità compositive dei loro testi, gli autori di translationes sfruttarono i margini di manovra delineati dalle politiche carolinge sui santi e le reliquie, se ne servirono all’interno delle loro strategie, e al contempo presero posizione nei confronti delle autorità che le avevano elaborate.

In Carolingian times the mobility of saints’ relics was deeply redefined and reshaped. Access to sanctity and relics transfers were increasingly cast under the control of public authorities. At the same time, new ways of narrating relics’ mobility were developed and many narratives aimed to show that transfers took place in the due respect of rules. Others, the so-called furta sacra, underlined instead the efforts to transfer relics outside of these structures through the consent expressed by God and the saints themselves. The very choice of narrative solutions reflected the ways in which authors used relics, transfers and the spaces defined by Carolingian politics within their strategies. By focusing on the modality of relics’ mobility, they expressed their positions regarding the authorities that developed them.
