Jean-Claude Gardin fut l’un des archéologues français les plus influents de la seconde moitié du xxe siècle, en France comme à l'étranger. Ses contributions à la formalisation des données (codes descriptifs) et du raisonnement (analyse logiciste) constituent un travail pionnier dans la constitution des fondements théoriques et épistémologiques de l'archéologie. Cet article vise à résumer les principales étapes de sa production dans le contexte scientifique et institutionnel de cette période, et à en clarifier les apports et les limites théoriques et pratiques.

Jean-Claude Gardin was one of the most influential French archaeologists from the second half of the 20th century, in France like abroad. His contributions to the formalization of data (descriptive codes) and the formalization of the reasoning (logicist analysis) were a pioneering work in the constitution of the theoretical and cognitive base of archaeology. This paper is designed to summarize the key stages of his production in the scientific and institutional context of this period, and to clarify the theoretical and practical contributions and limitations.
