Translating French Thought for Latin America and the Caribbean: The Case of the Cuban Journal Casa de las Américas

Historically, intellectual projects in Latin America and the Caribbean have frequently been founded on and nourished by translated narratives. As an ongoing practice in periodicals and in print culture at large, translation was at the core of numerous twentieth-century intellectual and editorial projects in Latin America and the Caribbean. This paper is part of a project aimed to trace translation in the Latin American intellectual field focusing on the translation praxis of influential literary and cultural periodicals. Here I focus specifically on the translations of texts by French intellectuals published in the Cuban Revista Casa de las Américas (1960-present). I start out offering an overview of the translation praxis of Revista Casa, briefly contrast it to that two of its predecessors—Orígenes and Ciclón—, and then focus on the translation of texts from French in Revista Casa, mainly between the sixties and the eighties, years of heated cultural and political debates in Latin America in which the role of this periodical was central. I underscore the fact that Revista Casa’s translation praxis departed from that of most periodicals in the Americas, specifically in regard to prevalent trends that privileged authors considered under what has come to be called “French Theory”. I end by discussing the strategic role of translation in Revista Casa to advance a Latin American- and Caribbean-focused vision and participate in the creation of decolonial intellectual cartographies for a reconfigured Latin American and Caribbean imaginary. I comment on the relevance of studying these cases as a way not only of documenting the past but of searching for possibilities for increased bibliodiversity in the twenty-first century.

Traditionnellement, les projets intellectuels en Amérique latine et dans les Caraïbes se sont souvent appuyés sur des récits traduits. Couramment pratiquée dans les périodiques et dans la culture de l’imprimé en général, la traduction a été au cœur de nombreuses entreprises intellectuelles et éditoriales du xxe siècle en Amérique latine et dans les Caraïbes. Cet article s’inscrit dans un projet visant à cerner le rôle joué par la traduction dans le domaine intellectuel latino-américain, en s’intéressant à la praxis traductive de périodiques littéraires et culturels influents. Je m’intéresse ici plus particulièrement aux traductions de textes d’intellectuels français publiés dans la Revista Casa de las Américas à Cuba (1960-présent). Je présente tout d’abord un aperçu de la pratique de la traduction dans Revista Casa, en la comparant brièvement à celle de deux revues qui l’avaient précédée, Orígenes et Ciclón, puis je me concentre sur la traduction de textes français dans la Revista Casa, principalement entre les années 1960 et 1980, périodes de débats culturels et politiques passionnés en Amérique latine, au cours desquelles le rôle de cette revue était central. Je souligne le fait que la praxis traductive de Revista Casa s’est écartée de celle de la plupart des périodiques des Amériques, notamment en ce qui concerne les tendances dominantes qui privilégiaient les auteurs de ce que l’on a appelé la French Theory. Je termine en évoquant le rôle stratégique de la traduction dans Revista Casa, au service d’une vision centrée sur l’Amérique latine et les Caraïbes, participant ainsi à la création de cartographies intellectuelles décoloniales et au renouvellement de l’imaginaire latino-américain et caribéen. Je souligne la pertinence de ces études de cas, non seulement pour documenter le passé, mais également comme possibilité d’accroître la bibliodiversité au xxie siècle.
