The old and ageing bodies often put on stage by the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio and Romeo Castellucci belong to a set of “outrageous presences”—sick bodies, children, animals, automata—which transgress Western society taboos and question the tragic dimension of theatre. Through the analysis of the recurrences, variations and intertextual connections in several works by the Castelluccis since the 1990s, this paper studies the specific meaning of the elderly age and proposes a threefold interpretation hinging on the maternal and paternal archetypes, and on the actor’s figure.
