Die Allgemeine Deutsche Bibliothek und die Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung als Medien des literarischen Epochenwandels

Cet article examine la critique littéraire entre 1770 et 1810 dans l’Allgemeine Deutsche Bibliothek et l’Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung, qui sont les journaux littéraires les plus importants de cette période. Les développements de l’espace public et le changement d’époque littéraire constituent le cadre de référence essentiel, puisque ces deux journaux ont été dirigés et organisés par des représentants des Lumières allemandes avec Nicolai comme éditeur de l’Allgemeine Deutsche Bibliothek d’un côté, et Wieland, Goethe et August Wilhelm Schlegel comme fondateurs et organisateurs de l’Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung et acteurs principaux de la période du classicisme de Weimar et du préromantisme de l’autre. Ils peuvent être vus aussi comme des représentants de points de vue opposés. Ces périodiques illustrent l’émergence de certaines tendances de la mode littéraire tout en constituant des facteurs importants d’établissement des normes esthétiques, qui sont étroitement liées avec les mécanismes du marché littéraire, particulièrement parce Nicolai et Bertuch étaient des libraires importants et étaient impliqués dans le succès de ces organes de presse.

Der Beitrag betrachtet die literaturkritische Praxis zwischen 1770 und 1810 anhand der seinerzeit führenden deutschen Rezensionsorgane Allgemeine Deutsche Bibliothek und Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung. Wesentlicher Bezugsrahmen dabei ist neben den Entwicklungen der deutschen literarischen Öffentlichkeit der literarische Epochenwandel, da beide Journale von führenden Protagonisten einerseits der Spätaufklärung mit Nicolai als Herausgeber und Verleger der Allgemeinen Deutschen Bibliothek, andererseits der Weimarer Klassik und Frühromantik u.a. mit Wieland, Goethe und August Wilhelm Schlegel als maßgeblichen Initiatoren der Allgemeinen Literatur-Zeitung entscheidend geprägt wurden, die zugleich in programmatischer Hinsicht als Antagonisten zu sehen sind. Beide Zeitschriften reflektieren das Aufkommen bestimmter literarischer Modeströmungen und erweisen sich dabei als entscheidende Wirkungsfaktoren, die eng mit den Funktionsmechanismen des literarischen Marktes verflochten sind, zumal mit Nicolai und Bertuch in beiden Fällen führende Verlagsbuchhändler unmittelbar an der Etablierung der Journale beteiligt waren.

In this contribution literary criticism between 1770 and 1810 is investigated by focusing on the Allgemeine Deutsche Bibliothek and the Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung as leading reviewing organs. The context is characterized by the developments of the public sphere and a change in literary sensibilities, for the two periodicals were shaped by leading protagonists of the late Enlightenment with Nicolai as editor and publisher of the Allgemeine Deutsche Bibliothek on the one hand, and with representatives of Weimar Classicism and early Romanticism with Wieland, Goethe and August Wilhelm Schlegel as leading initiators of the Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung on the other hand who can be seen as antagonists pursuing their own programmatic intentions. Those journals reflect the emergence of certain literary tendencies and played a decisive role in their propagation, at the same time as they were deeply involved in the functional mechanisms of the literary market, particularly since Nicolai and Bertuch as leading publishing booksellers participated directly in the establishment of both periodicals.
