This article focuses on the connection between the Malagasy monarchy and society through a total social fact: the fandroana, or bath ceremony. The fandroana ritual is more than a New Year’s celebration. It is a moment of symbolic and material exchanges, as well as political transactions that epitomise the renewed link between communities and the sovereign. The purpose of this article is to cast a new qualitative and quantitative light on the issue based on new sources, and especially the public accounting archives of the Kingdom of Madagascar, on the emic representations of power and on the political organization of this kingdom, which was one of the most bureaucratic powers in nineteenth-century Africa.
