Cet article pour la rubrique Document s’intéresse au journal intime d’Anne Lister, qui vécut dans son domaine de Shibden, près d’Halifax dans le nord de l’Angleterre, de 1826 à 1840. Ce journal a connu récemment une notoriété importante en devenant un élément du programme «  Mémoire du monde  » de l’Unesco, mais aussi parce qu’il a été le support d’une série télévisée à succès, Gentleman Jack (2019) diffusée sur HBO aux États-Unis et sur BBC 1 au Royaume-Uni. C’est en effet un document étonnant par son ampleur (24 volumes), mais aussi parce qu’une partie cryptée du texte n’a été élucidée que tardivement, révélant en particulier l’orientation sexuelle de son autrice. Anne Lister, femme d’affaires et d’influence, pieuse anglicane qui parvint à vivre librement son lesbianisme, apparaît ainsi comme une actrice hors norme de l’Angleterre du xixe siècle.

This article from the Document section looks at the diaries of Anne Lister (1791-1840), who inherited the estate at Shibden Hall near Halifax in 1826. The diaries recently gained considerable fame when they were included into the Unesco’s Memory of the World program, and they also provided the material for a successful television series, Gentleman Jack (2019), which was broadcast on HBO in the United States and on BBC 1 in the United Kingdom. It is an astonishing document due to its sheer size (24 volumes), but also because part of the text was encrypted. The code was only cracked much later, c.1892, thus notoriously revealing the sexual orientation of its author. Anne Lister, an influential businesswoman and a devout Anglican who managed to live her life freely as a lesbian, thus stands out as an extraordinary figure in 19th-century England.
